The Beeton Honey Festival is a celebration that brings families and towns together on the last weekend in May every year. The celebration started with a man named David Allanson Jones who was the “king of bees” and the first commercial honey producer in Canada, proving that it was an industry. His detection and spirit is brought into the festival of honey as we celebrate. The town known as Beeton was named after him and the honey he produced. The festival is thrown to emphasize the town's spirit of honey making dating back to the 1800s. The festival is celebrating old traditions, to have the town come together sharing talents and selling homemade gifts such as: honey, flowers, wood carvings and art. There are many vendors sharing a special talent coming from different towns and cities wanting to participate in Beeton's festival. The Beeton honey festival is a family activity that can be passed down to generations by attending this festival every year in their hometown. Parents taking their young children every year produces a love and tradition that will be passed on as they grow up. I know that my family has been going to this festival for over 14 years and I cherish this time and will be coming back for many years to come.

It's nice that the town maintains and showcases its old traditions. Why is it that your family goes to the festival?
ReplyDeleteThe picture you included really encapsulates what a town festival is supposed to do: close the roads to traffic, which opens them for public sharing. I love looking around during the Fergus Highland parade to see all of my neighbours gathering together for a common reason, and to cheer for all of the people who are sharing their talents and skills. We are so closed off from each other during the winter months, and the summer is a time to celebrate where we live. The success of these festivals says a lot about the spirit of a community: no matter who you are, if you live there, you are part of that culture.
